Heavy rains continue in Cauvery catachment area

Mysore, July 9: Authorities have issued flood warning downstream the Kabini and Hemavathi reservoirs in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka even as heavy rains continue to pound the catchment area of the river.

Reports here said today that the level of Hemavathy was just five feet short of its maximum level of 2922 ft with the inflow being 32,000 cusecs and the discharge 9000 cusecs.

Irrigation department sources told sources that the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir, near here recorded an inflow of 41,987 cusecs while the discharge was being maintained at 6,668 cusecs. The Hemavathy reservoir authorities in Hassan district issued an flood warning to the people living on the banks of the river to move to safer places since the discharge from the dam may increase any moment following expected heavy inflows to the reservoir.

The water level in KRS which dipped to 67 feet and was close to the dead storage level last month had increased dramatically since the onset of monsoon in June end. The water level today stood at 115.20 feet against the maximum level of 124.80 feet.

Meanwhile the Kabini reservoir which had already touching the brim level as its catchment area in Waynad in Kerala was also receiving good rains. The level stood at 2282 feet against the maximum level of 2284 feet.

The Harangi reservoir in Kodagu district level reached 2217 feet against the maximum level of 2259 feet. The outflow was 12,000 cusecs with inflow of 9000 cusecs.
