Kashmir shuts down on Geelani strike call
Srinagar, July 6: Kashmir shut down today on a strike call given by breakaway Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani in protest against the alleged fake encounter in Kupwara and the rape attempt by security personnel in Bandipora recently.
Schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained closed while the attendance in state and central government offices, semi-government organisations, autonomous bodies, private establishments and banks was thin.
Shops and other business establishments also remained closed while a limited public and private transport was seen on the roads.
Reports received here from various district headquarters in the Kashmir valley said normal life was paralysed due to the strike.
Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Badgam districts remained shut in response to the strike call.
Mr Geelani had called for the general strike in protest against the alleged fake encounter in Kupwara where four people, including a pregnant woman, were killed on June 28, and also the rape attempt on a Gujjar girl by two soldiers at Kunan in Bandipora district.
