Protest after civilian killed in army firing in JK
Srinagar, July 5: At least one person was killed and two others were wounded when a soldier opened on them at Kangan, leading to massive protests this afternoon.
Official sources said the trouble started when a group of people saw an army jawan forcibly taking a girl inside an under construction house near a camp at Kangan, about 40 km from here.
As people entered the under construction house, the soldier opened fire injuring three villagers. However, while fleeing towards the camp, the soldier shot at and injured himself with his service weapon.
The injured were rushed to the hospital where a 45-year-old Abdul Rehman Magray died. The other injured were identified as Abdul Razak and Sajjad Ahmad.
Hundreds of villagers took to streets after hearing about the incident.
Raising slogans against the security forces, the demonstrators alleged that the soldiers were using abusive language and misbehaving with women of the area near the camp.
Police have recorded the statement of the girl who said that she was on her way to submit a form in the school when the soldier forcibly took her to the under construction house.
The situation was very tense, sources said adding that the demonstrators had also blocked the Srinagar-Baltal road. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims are stranded on the road.
Additional police personnel have been rushed there to control the situation, sources added.
