Detained Indian housemaids on rise in Qatar: ICBF
Dubai, July 6: The number of Indian housemaids in the oil and gas-rich country, Qatar, fleeing their sponsors and detained in deportation centres, has sharply increased over the past two months, an official of the Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF) said.
There are also 122 men at the detention centre in Doha seeking to be sent back to India, ICBF's President Nilangshu Dey said.
Many people were detained only because there was no-one to provide them with the air tickets, he told the Peninsula newspaper.
ICBF, which is working in cooperation with the Indian Embassy, not only provides air tickets for the detainees, but also extends medical assistance to those who cannot afford healthcare, Mr Dey said.
