Indian Embassy to help amnesty seekers in Dubai
Dubai, July 6: The Indian Embassy, which has opened special counters to handle the rush of amnesty seekers, is holding talks with various airlines to seek highly discounted one-way fare for those who want to go to their native places.
The Embassy has collected 9,600 more passports of Indian workers lying with the Abu Dhabi Naturalisation and Residency Department for various reasons such as absconding, lost, sponsors' complaints, etc, an embassy official said.
The Embassy has received 560 applications from illegal Indian residents and 250 outpasses have been issued.
In the past three days, 265 workers approached the embassy while in June, only 300 had contacted them seeking advice.
The Embassy, which is opening a 24-hour helpline on Monday, is being assisted by various Indian community organisations.
More than 18,000 illegal residents in Dubai, mostly from South Asia, have already obtained outpasses and benefited from the amnesty, said an official of the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD).
