Flood alert sounded in Karnataka

Bangalore, July 5: The authorities have sounded a flood alert in Karnataka following heavy inflows of water from Maharashtra into Krishna and Bhima rivers, even as the reservoirs in Cauvery basin were filling up due to good rains in the catchment areas. Officials said while the death toll in Belgaum district rose to 21 during the season with the recovery of two more bodies, it touched four in Kodagu district.

Relief centres were set up in many parts of Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot and Gulbarga districts and hundreds of people, living along the banks of the rivers, were shifted to safer places.

A warning had been issued to the people living in low lying areas of Kabini reservoir in Mysore district following heavy rains in catchment areas of Wyanad district in Kerala.

River Bhima touched the danger mark for the first time in the season at Devalgaon Bridge due to heavy discharge from Veerbhatakal reservoir in Maharashtra. The level touched 4.5 m as against the danger mark of 4.4 m.

Discharge from Alamatti reservoir in Bagalkot across river Krishna remained high at 2.45 lakh cusecs while the inflow was 2.44 lakh cusecs. The level was maintained at 514.75 m against the full level of 519 m. The inflow into downstream Narayanpur rose to 2.36 lakh cusecs and 2.3 lakh cusecs of water was being discharged into Jurala project in Andhra Pradesh. The total outflow into Andhra Pradesh was 3.79 lakh cusecs.

In Belgaum, the situation in Krishna river posed a threat with 1,60,318 cuses of water released from Rajapur Barrage in Maharashtra.

At the Krishnarajasagar reservoir across Cauvery near Mysore city, the level rose to 105.90 ft against the maximum level of 124.8 ft. The inflow was at 40,458 cusecs and outflow 1875 cusecs.

The water levels in Harangi and Hemavathy reservoirs in Cauvery basin were also rising steadily due to good inflows, the officials added.
