K'taka in touch with M'shtra on release from Koyna
Bangalore, July 2 The Karnataka government was in constant touch with Maharashtra on the release of water from the Koyna dam, following the incessant rain in its border districts of Sangli and Solapur, Revenue Minister Jagdish Shettar said today.
Speaking to newspersons here, he said the officials had met their counterparts in Maharashtra and agreed to coordinate in the release of surplus water from Koyna in view of its effect in the districts of Bijapur, Bagalkot and Belgaum.
Both the states were constantly monitoring the increased inflow of water into the Koyna dam following heavy rain, he informed.
The damage caused due to the release of excess water from Koyna dam was less this year as the state government had taken adequate precautionary measures, he added.
Stating that the state had suffered a loss of Rs 157.2 crore due to the rain havoc so far, the minister said the government would send a report on the estimated loss soon to the Centre for immediate assistance.
He said a Cabinet sub-committee on drought and flood reliefs would meet later in the day.
