M'shtra: Rain fury claims five lives in Vidarbha

Nagpur, June 30: Incessant heavy rains over the past 24 hours claimed five lives, including that of an aged woman and a toddler, in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra today.

The downpour claimed three lives in Nagpur district and one in Amravati district, while a child drowned in a rain-related incident in Gondia district.

According to police, two persons were swept away by swirling river waters in Narkhed in the district this afternoon. They were identified as Deepak Bajirao Bansod (26) and Sheikh Momuddin Rasool Diwan (45), both residents of Narkhed. Bansod's body has been found, while that of Diwan has not been found yet, police said.

A woman, Bhulabai Shamrao Barange (80), was killed when a wall in her house collapsed due to heavy rains in village Junapani near Kondhali in the district, the police also said.

Ramdas Lavande (30) was swept away by the swirling waters of a nullah in village Karajgaon in Chandur Bazar tehsil in Amravati district today, the police said, adding that the body had not yet been found.

A three-year old child, identified as Kesar Chaitram Uike, died when he fell into a waterlogged pit at a construction site in village Pandharwani in Sadak Arjuni tehsil in Gondia district of the region, the police said. The pit, which had been made for erecting a column, had filled up with water due to the heavy rains in the area when Kesar fell into it while playing, the police added.
