India and US hail election schedule in Nepal

Kathmandu, June 27: India, the UN and the US have welcomed the announcement of date for assembly elections in Nepal.

The Indian government has said the announcement of the date of the CA( Constituent Assembly)elections in Nepal is an important step towards the institutionalisation of democracy,peace and development in the Himalayan nation.

India has wished the Government of Nepal all success in holding of these elections through which the Nepalese would determine the future of their country in a free and fair manner.

"India, as a close friend and neighbour of Nepal, stands ready to render whatever support is required to achieve these key objectives," said Mr Navtej Sarna,the official spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry of India, at New Delhi yesterday.

US Ambassador to Nepal James F Moriarty called on Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at the latter's official residence at Baluwatar and conveyed the US government's pleasure at the announcement of date of CA election in Nepal.

During the meeting the duo discussed contemporary political situations and Nepal-US relation, among others.

According to Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr Suresh Chalise, ambassador Moriarty reiterated the US commitment for all possible assistance and support for the ongoing peace process and consolidation of democracy in Nepal.

As per Dr Chalise, Moriarty also said his country welcomed the declaration of the date for the Constituent Assembly(CA)election in Nepal and that US was confident that the election would be successful.
