'Congress playing 'woman card' for President'
Jabalpur, June 24: BJP Mahila Morcha leader and former Union Minister Sumitra Mahajan today considered it unfortunate that the Congress was playing the 'woman card' for the country's highest constitutional post. ''Besides evidencing immature politics, the step reveals a desire to misuse power. However, there is scant doubt that UPA presidential candidate Pratibha Patil is a fine lady,'' the saffron party Vice-President told reporters here.
Alleging that similar politics by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi led to the Congress' ''weak'' condition, Ms Mahajan added that AICC supremo Sonia Gandhi was treading a similar path.
Responding to a query on 33 per cent reservation for women, she said, ''granting reservation alone will not suffice to ensure that women fulfill an empowered role in politics. The contemporary political atmosphere demands that select women leaders and workers alike possess awareness on principal matters, the economy and foreign affairs.''
