I will contest if there is consensus: Karan Singh
New Delhi, June 14: Congress leader Karan Singh today said he would contest for the Presidentship if there was a consensus between the UPA and the Left parties on his name for the coveted post.
''If there is a consensus, it will be an honour for me to contest,'' he told reporters while emerging from a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the new Tamil Nadu House here.
On reports that he was linked with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), he said he had only been invited for a ''Viraat Hindu Sammelan.'' When a reporter asked him if he was calling on Mr Karunanidhi in view of the Presidential poll, Dr Singh said ''this is your inference. We have been friends for 40 years. It was a courtesy call.'' Mr Ahmed Patel, the Political Secretary to the Congress President, also met the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and later said the Presidential candidate would be finalised by tomorrow evening.
Asked if he was carrying any message from Ms Gandhi for Mr Karunanidhi, he said ''Yes, of course. I'm carrying a message.''
