SC dismisses petition on Sethusamudram project
New Delhi, May 28: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition challenging Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project, which if implemented would destroy the legendary Rama sethu constructed by Lord Rama's monkey army to travel to Lanka.
The petition, filed by a Dandi monk of the Shankaracharya order, was dismissed as withdrawn, by a vacation bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and D K Jain.
The bench, however, asked the petitioner to approach the authorities for necessary relief, with the relevant material in support of his case.
''In case the authorities concerned fail to act, the petitioner shall be at liberty to approach the court again,'' the court observed.
According to the petitioner, the project would adversely affect the environment of the area besides hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community.
