Major tragedy on Kashmir highway averted
Srinagar, Apr 27: A day before employees of the darbar move offices started their return journey to the summer capital of Srinagar from the winter capital of Jammu, militants made an unsuccessful attempt to detonate a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the highway today.
Official sources said militants planted a 10 kg powerful IED beneath a culvert in Qazigund area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway to target a security force convoy.
They said alert personnel of the Road Opening Party (ROP) during the search of the area, noticed the IED.
Traffic on the highway was stopped and a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) summoned. Later, it was defused without causing any damage.
The IED was planted a day before state government employees working with move offices started their journey from Jammu to here.
The civil secretariat, seat of the government, and other darbar move offices were closed at Jammu this afternoon to reopen here on May seven.
A traffic police official told UNI that traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu today. However, vehicle carrying employees and other passengers would be allowed to ply tomorrow and on April 29. No vehicle would be allowed from here during these days, he said.
