'Ethics Committee to study Katara, other cases'

New Delhi, Apr 25: The NDA today demanded that all the cases relating to the conduct of MPs, including the suspended BJP MP Babubhai Katara allegedly involved in human trafficking, be referred to the Ethics Committee of Parliament.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the residence of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to discuss issues to be raised by the NDA in the second phase of the Monsoon Session of Parliament starting tomorrow.

Addressing newspersons, BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said the NDA was of the view that there should be no discrimination in referring issues related to the conduct of MPs, irrespective of their party affiliation, to the Ethics Committee.

''However, let the cases pending in courts take their own course,'' he said, referring to the cases related to JMM leader Shibu Soren and Congress MP M K Subba.

Mr Malhotra criticised Finance Minister P Chidambaram for going on foreign tours when most of the finance bills were to be discussed in Parliament. ''He should give more importance to Parliamentary responsibilities rather than foreign travel,'' he added.

Spiralling price rise, internal security, Bofors scam accused Ottavio Quattrochi, and farmer's plight were some of the issues relating to the people of the country which would be raised by the Opposition during the session forcefully, he said.
