Dholakia mum on IIM-A's admission abeyance

Ahmedabad, Apr 22: ''Not one word more or one word less,'' is how Indian Institute of Managament-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) director Bakul Dholakia reacted on being asked about the institute's decision to keep in abeyance admissions to its postgraduate programme for the coming academic year until the OBC quota issue was resolved.

Mr Dholakia, when contacted by UNI yesterday, refused to comment on the issue. When pointed out that going with the normal admission procedures was a commitment made by the six IIMs and it would not be against the Supreme Court stay, Mr Dholakia only said, ''Not one word more or one word less.'' He refused to be drawn into questions on any aspect of the issue and said whatever he and the institute have to say is available on the IIMA website.

IIM-Ahmedabad had earlier said it would offer admissions to successful candidates for its 2007 postgraduate programme by putting out the merit lists yesterday as per the procedure followed every year. This stand was adopted after a teleconference of the six IIM directors on April 12 which clearly indicated that the six IIMs were preparing to take the HRD Ministry head-on after the latter asked the IIMs to put on hold all admission procedures until further orders.

However, on Friday, IIM-A said in a statement, ''In pursuance to the advice of the Human Resource Development Ministry and in view of the fact that the implementation of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 is sub judice in the Supreme Court, IIM-A has taken this decision.''
