UP: BJP concerned over low percentage of polling
Lucknow, Apr 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party today complimented the Election Commission (EC) for peaceful conduct of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls but demanded corrective measures to improve the voting percentage.
''BJP is concerned over the low turnout of the voters in the first phase on April 7 and second phase today owing to some irregularities the EC must looked into ,''BJP vice president and senior party leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters here.
The faulty voters' lists, rather discouraging attitude of the security forces deployed at the polling booths and several lacunae in voters identification had been some of reason behind the low turnout at the hustings, he said.
In reply to a question, the senior BJP leader said it was immaterial as which party would suffer the most due to the low percentage of voting but the franchise was a constitutional right every citizen should be ensured to excercise.
''Since. five more phases are still to go, I appeal to the EC to take corrective measures to improve the voters, turnout otherwise whole excercise of fair and free polls would come to a nought,'' Mr Sinha said.
