Stir against CWDT award enters 50th day

Mysore, Mar 25: The protest against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagara entered the 50th day today.

The Janata Dal (United), which has taken an "Awareness Jatha" from Krishnarajasagar Reservoir four days ago, reached Mandya district today with its President B Somasekhar leading the padayatra. A dharna was later staged in the town.

Various other organisations, including Women Milk Producers Association, agitated against the verdict. Dharnas were also held at Maddur, Srirangpatana and Pandavapura. The relay strike by Cauvery Ritha Hita Rakshna Samithi led by G Made Gowda continued at Silver Jubilee Park.

Recently constituted Cauvery-Krishna Coordination Committee, would organise a rally in Bangalore on March 31 to put a pressure on the Karnataka Legislatures to pass a resolution in the Assembly against the implementation of the final award of the CWDT.

The Committee convenor Kohihalli Chandrasekhar in a press release said, ''Till the national water policy was not formed to settle the Inter-State Water Disputes, the MPs of both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should ensure that no decision was taken towards notification of the CWDT award.

'' The Committee would also take up Delhi Chalo programme this May,'' he said.

In Mysore, the Yuva Kannada Balaga members took out a rally on motorcycles from the city to Bangalore against the verdict. The relay strike by Cauvery Kriya Samithi continued at K R Circle.
