Black day observed against Cauvery verdict
Mysore, Mar 23: The Cauvery Hitaraskhna Samithi, spearheading the non-stop agitations against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the basin regions, observed the day as ''Black Day'' in all the taluks of Mandya district. At Silver Jubilee park in Mandya district, the Samithi members, led by its President G Made Gowda, staged a dharna, wearing black clothes.
Farmers resorted to road blockades at Maddur, Mandya, Gejjelagere, Srirangapatna and other places, affecting normal traffic between Bangalore and Mysore. They also stopped the Mysore-Chennai Shatabdi Express at Gejjelagere for some time.
Students of various schools and colleges joined the agitation.
Farmers also gheraoed K R Nagara MLA, Manchanhalli Mahadev, and asked him to participate in the agitation.
In Mandya town, NRIs belonging to AKKA Kannada Association took out a procession to stage protest.
In Mysore, the awareness jatha by the Janata Dal (United), led by its State President B Somashekhar from Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir yesterday, entered the city and the party workers staged a dharna for some time at K R Circle. Later, the jatha left for Chamarajanagara district enroute to Bangalore where they would submit a memorandum to the Governor on March 25.
Speaking to reporters here, Mr Somashekhar urged the State Government to bring pressure on the Union Government for framing a national water policy, which would be the only solution to water disputes in the country.
The Cauvery Kriya Samithi of Mysore district continued its dharna at K R Circle.
