Magnitude 6 quake off eastern Japan; no damage
Tokyo, Mar 8: A magnitude 6 earthquake was registered southeast of Japan's eastern coast, the Meteorological Agency said today.
The focus of the tremor was 140 km below the surface of the earth near Torishima, an uninhabited island 600 km south of Tokyo, the agency said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.
The earthquake measured up to two on the Japanese intensity scale, which measures ground motion. A quake with that reading could be felt by some people.
Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude six or greater.
