We will increase constituencies in Terai: Koirala

Kathmandu, Feb 8: Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said electoral constituencies would be increased based on population and geographic appropriateness in Terai.

Addressing the nation at midnight last night, the Prime Minister said, ''the interim Constitution will soon be amended to incorporate these new agreements.'' More than two dozen people have been killed in the demonstrations being held in Terai demanding the increase of constituencies based on population.

Mr Koirala also expressed the government's determination to ensure participation of Madhesi, Janajati, Dalit, women and backward communities in all organisations of the state.

He appreciated the role played by Madhesi community in people's movement and strengthening the democracy.

Expressing his sorrow over the loss of lives and properties in the current unrest in the region he conveyed his condolences to those who died during the protest and vowed to provide relief to injured.

Mr Koirala made the announcement after a meeting of senior leaders of the seven parties alliance at his residence yesterday.

The Prime Minister has urged the agitators to withdraw their agitation and concentrate on making the Constituent Assembly elections successful.

He addressed the nation in the presence of the senior leaders of the eight parties including the Chairman of the CPN, Maoists Prachanda and General Secretary of the CPN UML Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Following the address by the Prime Minister, Rajendra Mahato, General Secretary of Nepal Sadbhavana Party-Anandidevi said this will fulfill the demands raised by the people of Madhesi and hoped that the unrest would be stopped.
