UPA scared of US to react on Saddam hanging: Basu

Kolkata, Dec 31: Alleging that the UPA government was afraid ofAmerica, veteran marxist leader Jyoti Basu today said India's reactionto Saddam Hussein's execution should have been stronger.

''They are afraid of the US. The government should have come outwith a stronger reaction,'' Mr Basu told the newsmen after attendingthe CPIM's state committee meeting.

In a brief reaction the UPA government yesterday described the excecution of the former Iraqi ruler as unfortunate.

The nonageraian leader said Saddam Hussain was falsely implicatedand the present Iraqi government did not have any right to hold histrial.

''America has occupied Iraq and is running a puppet governmentthere, which does not have the right to hold trial or pronounce deathsentence for Saddam Hussein,'' he said.
