Quota: BJP opposes exclusion of minority institutions
New Delhi, Dec 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today came down heavily on the UPA government for excluding minority institutions from the purview of the law providing reservation to the weaker sections in centrally maintained or aided institutions.
Initiating a discussion on the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Bill, 2006 introduced in the Rajya Sabha today by Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, senior BJP Member S S Ahluwalia said the exclusion of the minority institutions was discriminatory and went against the provisions of the Constitution.
He said that it was indicative of the failure of the government that even 56 years after Independence, the provision of reservation was needed to educationally uplift weaker sections.
Referring to Article 45 and 46 and Article 15, Mr Ahluwalia said if the provisions contained in these articles had been implemented sincerely, there would have been cent per cent literacy in the country.
He quoted Pandit Nehru's observations at the time of introduction of the first Amendment to the Constitution in 1951 advising against thinking in terms of community while talking of backwardness as it would lead to a communal approach.
