TRS to adopt 2-pronged strategy for statehood

Hyderabad, Dec 13: Enthused by the impressive victory in the Karimnagar Lok Sabha bypoll, the regional outfit Telangana Rashtra Samiti has decided to strengthen the movement for separate Telangana at the grassroots level and mount pressure on the ruling United Progressive Alliance (CUPA) to concede the demand.

Ruling out forcing byelections by resigning the MLA and MP seats in the wake of the record win by former Union Labour Minister and TRS founder president K Chandrasekhara Rao in the Karimnagar bypoll, party spokesman Prakash told UNI that ''now it has been clearly proved that there is a groundswell of support for the Telangana state.'' It was for the Congress MPs and MLAs from the region who had not responded to the party's call to resign their seats enmasse and get tested with which party's support, the other party had won.

''Our strategy is to exert pressure on the UPA Government through our allies for introduction of a bill in Parliament for creation of Telangana state, evenwhile strengthening the party and the movement at the grassroots level,'' he explained.

Accusing the Congress leaders from Telangana of compromising the interests of the region for power sake, he said ''we will encircle the Ministers as also Congress MLAs and MPs whereever they go and question them as to why their party has not delivered on its promise to facilitate formation of separate state.'' ''Now it has been proved that it was with our support, the Congress has come back to power in the state as also at the Centre,'' he added.

''Starting from the ''Vijayotsava Sabha''(Victory rally) in Nalgonda on December 22, we will hold one such meeting in each of the 10 Telangana districts to spearhead the movement,'' he informed.

In an effort to get close to the people, the party would identify with local people's problems and launch stirs against alleged diversion of Krishna and Godavari waters to other regions at the cost of farmers in Telangana, he said.
