Education is not just learning lessons: Kalam

Tirupati, Dec 12: President A P J Abdul Kalam yesterday said education was not just learning lessons, but about building human values with knowledge.

Interacting with the students of Peepal Grove School at Gongivaripalli near here, the President said the teachers influence and mould the life of the students.

To a question from a student, Mr Kalam said as President of India he would like to see smiles in all faces in the country.

On a student's question, ''How would you like to see us grow ?'', the President said, ''You should have a goal in life. Acquire knowledge. Work hard. Problems shouldn't defeat you. You should defeat problems and succeed.'' On another question about the title of the President's autobiography 'Wings of Fire', Dr Kalam said 'Wings of Fire' refers to dream, thoughts and action.

Wings enable particularly the youth to fly with their thoughts and ideas. Fire kindles those thoughts and purifies them. That is why the book is called ''Wings of Fire'', he said.
