Security alerted for Babri demolition anniversary
Tiruchirapalli, Dec 4: Security measures have been stepped up in Tiruchirapalli district, in view of the 14th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition on December six.
Tamil Nadu Intelligence Section (IS) sources told UNI here today that the police department was put on high alert. Armed police personnel were deployed at vulnerable points, places of worship, historic temples and railway overbridges, they added.
More than 500 security personnel were drawn from the city police and Armed Reserve and Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalions were pressed into service. All the eight entry points into the city were closely monitored and vehicle checks and night patrolling were intensified.
An exclusive 'bandobust scheme' had been drafted by the Government Railway Police (GRP) by enhancing security at railway stations and additional Railway Police personnel deployed for escort duty in long distance express trains, a GRP official said.
Security measures would be ''exhaustive'' on December five and six, he added.
Around 1,000 police men had been mobilised across GRP Tiruchi Police District, which has a vast jurisdiction starting from Villupuram to Kanyakumari in the south.
Apart from the installation of door-frame metal detectors, passengers were frisked and luggages thoroughly checked. The twenty six-odd major bridges in the jurisdiction of the Railway Police, Tiruchirapalli, including the famous Pamban Bridge at Rameswaram, would be manned by armed police personnel, he added.
