Mumbai: Tight security arrangements for Dec 6
Mumbai, Dec 3: Against a backdrop of the recent violent protests by Dalit groups in the city and other parts of the state, Mumbai police have boosted security arrangements for the forthcoming 50th death anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar and the annual Urs of Baba Maqdoomi on December 6, to avoid any untoward incident.
Incidentally, both the events fall on the same day, coinciding with the 14th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.
According to police sources, the sites for Ambedkar's anniversary celebrations and Urs are separated by a distance of three KM.
Lakhs of people are expected to converge on Chaitya Bhoomi, Dadar and thousands more are expected to attend the annual Urs of Maqdoom Shah Baba at Mahim, in central Mumbai on the day.
Joint Commissioner of Police, Arup Patnaik (Law and Order) said ''we are taking all preventive measures and boosting security at strategic locations to ensure that the events pass off trouble free and in a peaceful manner.'' Patnaik said security measures are being stepped up according to the briefs received from Central agencies, as the day is also the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.
In order to bolster existing security, additional companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and extra personnel from the Home Guards will be deployed to assist the city police, he added.
