B'desh: Trade with India on after 4-day strike

Kolkata, Nov 16: Trade between India and Bangladesh resumed today at the Petrapol-Benapol corridor at Bongaon near here after four days of indefinite strike in the neighbouring country.

Though the border gate had remained open, export activities from this side remained suspended since November 12 due to political agitation, spearheaded by the 14-party opposition alliance, in the neighbouring country.

Nearly a thousand trucks were halted and about 868 remained stranded with goods at the central warehouse terminal near the border, while about three goods laden trucks were stranded at a Bangaon town terminal, official sources said.

Traders with perishable items suffered heavy losses.

Import activities from Bangladesh also resumed this morning, custom officials said.

However, despite the strike, international trade continued at Ghojadanga near Basirhat where at least 138 Indian trucks entered Bangladesh and only two from their side entered India, customs sources said.
