Sensex touches another high, closes 12,928.18

Mumbai, Oct 16: The Bombay Stock Exchange refurbished its image further as it closed inches away from 13k mark, after the initial drop-off when the index pared gains in the intra-noon trade, to finally close up by 191.76 points at 12,928.18.

BSE sensex today swirled 168.73 points, touching an all time high of 12,953.76, as IT heavyweights, PSU and PVt Banking scrips edged higher on firm Asian cues and strong FII inflow, however it also touched a low of 12, 785.03 after investors booked profit at the higher margins.

Amongst the BSE sectoral indices, Auto was the only sector to close in the negative, however the Bankex rose by 2.5 per cent, on the back of assumed strong performance by the public and Private sector banks in their second quarter financilas. Consumer Durables was up by 1.87 per cent, Capital Goods by 1.49 per cent, and FMCG along with IT, Metals, Oila dn Gas and Teck sector were all up by more than one per cent.

The breadth in the broader market however turned negative in favour of 1,446 declines as against 1097 advances out of total 2,597 scrips that traded the BSE counters today.

Meanwhile, crude oil rose above USD Dollar 59 a barrel mark, after OPEC called an emergency eeting later this week in Qatar, to finalise plans for a cut in output.

Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were HDFC Bank up by 5.85 per cent to Rs 1,046.55, Hindalco up by 4.02 per cent to Rs 182.25, ICICI Bank up by 3.55 per cent to Rs 719.90, L&T up by 3.07 per cent to Rs 1,306.25, ITC up by 2.72 per cent to Rs 194.15, TCS up by 2.33 per cent to Rs 1, 130.45, Wipro up by 2.31 per cent to Rs 570.40, Satyam up by 2.18 per cent to Rs 436.20, Reliance Industries up by 1.95 per cent to Rs 1,213.40 and Bharti Airtel up by 1.70 per cent to Rs 485.70.

Besides the losers were Gujarat Ambuja down by 0.70 per cent to Rs 121.30, bajaj Auto down by 0.50 per cent to Rs 3,105.85, ACC down by 0.45 per cent to Rs 1,001.35, Dr Reddy's Lab down by 0.41 per cent to Rs 722.10 , Tata Motors down by 0.38 per cent to Rs 907.20, Hero Honda down by 0.35 per cent to Rs 746.25, Ranbaxy Laboratories down by 0.14 per cent to Rs 417.30 and Grasim Industries down by 0.13 per cent to Rs 2,669.05.
