Poojary wants CBI probe into Mangalore violence
Mangalore, Oct 14: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Janardhan Poojary today demanded a CBI inquiry into the recent communal clashes in Mangalore and its outskirts, in which two persons were killed.
Addressing a press conference after visiting the violence-hit areas, the former Union Minister stressed that the Government should exercise political will and ban organisations instigating violence.
As there was a law to penalise those who had given the bandh call, the Government should recover the compensation to be awarded to the victims from them, he advocated.
Defending the recent visit of Union Minister of State for Home to the riot-hit areas in the district, Mr Poojary said Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy should have visited the district first to take stock of the situation and pacify the people. Parliament was also answerable to the people during such violence. The Union Minister had to return the same day as the President had given him an appointment the very next day.
When the annual Dasara procession and Sharada procession were scheduled in some parts of the district, how could the Government decide to send the police to Chikmagalur, he asked.
