BJP demands white paper on Chikungunya outbreak
Chennai, Oct 9: The BJP in Tamil Nadu today demanded that the State Government should come out with a white paper with the medical experts' remarks on the outbreak of Chikungunya fever in the state.
The Party's State General Secretary Dr Tamilisai Sounderrajan, addressing a press conference here, pointed out that though several persons were affected by the disease in Tamil Nadu, she did not know the reason behind the DMK Government's continous denial about the outbreak of the Chikungunya.
She said while ruling DMK denied that there were no chikungunya cases in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK claimed that several hundred people had died. The issue was being politicised through such claims and counter claims by these parties, she alleged.
She pointed out that Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan drew direct attention of Union health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss about the widespread attack of chikungunya in different parts of Kerala and got adequate financial and other assistance from the Union Government.
But Chief Minister M Karunanidhi categorically denied that there was no chikungunya in Tamil Nadu. The state was not getting any more assistance from not only the Centre, but also from the World Health Organisation (WHO). This was highly condemnable, she charged.
She urged the Centre to establish a sophisticated laboratory in Tamil Nadu for clinically analysing diseases like chikungunya and Dengu fever, as the facility was right now available only at Pune.
Referring to the attack and arrest against the former AIADMK ministers Madhusudhanan and Mr Shanmugam at Madurai by the ruling DMK men on Saturday night, she alleged that the incident showed that the ruling DMK men taken the law into their hands.
