CM Karunanidhi denies Jaya's allegations

Chennai, Oct 8: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today denied the allegations made by former Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo Ms Jayalalithaa that so far 287 persons died of Chikungunya and about 60 lakh people were affected by the disease in the state.

In a statement here today, Mr Karunanidhi pointed out that if Jayalalithaa's claim that 60 lakh people in Tamil Nadu were affected by Chikungunya was true, then at least one person out of every 10 could be affected by the disease. He asked how a former Chief Minister could mislead the people by giving incorrect data.

He denied another allegation made by her that ten days interval between the local body elections polling and the counting was to execute a ''horse trade'' in favour of ruling DMK.

Similar practices were adopted in 2001 local body elections by then AIADMK government led by Ms Jayalalithaa, he added.

He took strong exception over her remarks that soon after the local body elections the concessions announced and implemented by the DMK government would be stopped.

He said Ms Jayalalithaa should know that DMK government had earmarked a sum of Rs 750 crore for the distribution of second phase of colour televisions. She would also witness the DMK government's distribution of 2 acres of free land to the landless poor once in every three months, he added.
