'Venod Sharma's resignation based on moral principle'

New Delhi, Oct 6: The Congress Party today welcomed the resignation of Haryana Power Minister Venod Sharma in the context of his son Manu Sharma's name figuring in the sensational murder of model Jessical Lal, but said it was his individual decision based on "high moral principle." "It is individual decision. It is not based on calpability or fault, but on high moral principle," Party Spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi told mediapersons.

He said Mr Sharma had handed over his resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the morning. "The resignation is pending with the President who will take a final decision." Asked if there was any pressure from the party high command for his resignation, he replied in the negative, pointing out that there was no FIR or criminal legal proceedings against Mr Venod Sharma.

"He has resigned presumably on high moral grounds." In this context, Dr Singhvi pointed out that Mr Venod Sharma has had an independent political career spanning over more than 20 years during which he had held several posts in the party, Haryana and Central governments.
