Sensex up 74 pts on strong industrial growth

Mumbai, Sept 29: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) today rose 73.68 points to 12,454.42 as the investors rolled over their positions for the October derivatives and the GDP for April-June grew 8.9 per cent led by growth in manufacturing sector.

The rally on sensex throughout the day was led by buying in Midcap and the Smallcap indices which were both up 1.41 and 1.16 per cent.

Though the Banking scrips today declined by 0.91 per cent on profit bookings, experts at Emkay Research, a broking firm, believe banking sector would lead the rally in the light of strong build up and rollovers in majority of banking stocks in the F&O segment.

Earlier sensex opened 34 points in the green at 12,414 as investors bought select stocks of the blue chip companies. Sensex today touched a high of 12,485.17 and low of 12,381.29 showing a swing of 103.88 points.

The pack of gainers amongst the sectoral indices on BSE was led by Metals up 1.96 per cent and was followed by Consumer Durables up 1.86 per cent, Auto sector up 1.80 per cent and FMCG up by 1.44 per cent.

The breadth too in the broader market was positive in favour of 1,609 advances as against 896 declines out of total 2,568 scrips that traded the BSE counters today, 63 scrips however remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices today traded at US Dollar 62 per barrel mark.

Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Maruti Udyog up by 4.12 per cent to Rs 981.20, Tata Steel up by 3.22 per cent to Rs 535.65, Bajaj Auto up by 2.49 per cent to Rs 2,998.20, Tata Motors up by 2.33 per cent to Rs 862.05 per cent, HDFC up by 2.25 per cent to Rs 1,534.30, Ranbaxy up by 2.21 per cent to Rs 439.85, NTPC up by 2.04 per cent to Rs 130.20, Reliance Communications up by 1.99 per cent to Rs 346.75, ITC up by 1.97 per cent to Rs 187.65 and Grasim Industries up by 1.82 per cent to Rs 2,519.65.

Besides the losers on the index were Hero Honda down by 1.84 per cent to Rs 774.55, ICICI Bank down by 1.32 per cent to Rs 699.05, ONGC down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 1,170.05, Cipla down by 0.66 per cent to Rs 262.25, Bharti Airtel down by 0.48 per cent to Rs 468.85, Infosys down by 0.46 per cent to Rs 1,847.90, HDFC Bank down by 0.17 per cent to Rs 926.00 and SBI down by 0.05 per cent.
