Sensex up by 46 pts on cautious trade, closes at 12,367

Mumbai, Sep 27: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive index (Sensex) today maintained a positve margin of around 90 plus, however, late selling cracked it to close up at 46 points in the green at 12,367, as strong buying acivity was noticed in the midcap scrips.

Sensex swung 103 points touching a high of 12,442 and a low of 12,339. Similarly the S&P CNX Nifty too gained 7.45 points to close at 3,579.20, it earlier touched a three month high of 3,600 plus figure. The volatility is expected to remain high on account of expiry of September derivative-contracts on Thursday.

The breadth too in the broader market turned positive in favour of 1,346 advances against 1,157 declines out of total 2,585 scrips that traded the BSE counters today, however, 82 scrips remained unchanged.

BSE today clocked a turnover of Rs 3,279 crore compared to 3,501 crore yesterday.

All the benchmark Asian and European Indices traded in the green.

The Nikkei 225 index finished 390.42 points higher, at 15,947.87, its highest close since September seven, 2006. The Hang Seng index rose 213.43 points or 1.23 per cent to close at 17,521.51.

US indices posted significant gains on Tuesday as investors' cheered the strong consumer confidence report. As a result, the Dow Jones reached its highest level in more than six years, to finish at 11,669, up 94 points from the previous close, while the Nasdaq Composite index rose by 12 points, to 2,261.

Meanwhile, the NYMEX crude for November delivery rose 24 cents, to USD 61.25 a barrel. US data due later on Wednesday is expected to show a rise in distillate and gasoline stocks. Oil prices have seen their steepest decline in 15 years since hitting a record USD of 78.40 a barrel in July.

Amongst the sectoral indices on BSE Banking sector led the pack of gainers, up by 1.37 per cent and Health Care was up by 1.06 per cent.

However, there were few losers too. Teck sector declined by 0.07 per cent, Oil and Gas by 0.05 and IT by 0.03 per cent.

Major gainers on the index were Reliance Energy up by 3.88 per cent to Rs 481.50, HDFC up by 1.89 per cent to Rs 1,446.70, Maruti Udyog up by 1.84 per cent to Rs 963.50, Cipla up by 1.67 per cent to Rs 264.90, ICICI Bank up by 1.50 per cent to Rs 688.15, Bajaj Auto up by 1.25 per cent to Rs 2,938.55, HDFC Bank up by 1.19 per cent to Rs 898.75, ITC up by 1.03 per cent to Rs 185.65, Ranbaxy up by 0.98 per cent to Rs 421.05 and Tata Steel up by 0.59 per cent to Rs 515.65.

Besides the losers were Hero Honda down by 1.19 per cent to Rs 778.40, Wipro down by 1.17 per cent to Rs 520.25, L&T down by 1.11 per cent to Rs 2, 589.20, Tata Motors down by 0.74 per cent to Rs 850.75, HLL down by 0.37 per cent to Rs 257.70, Bharti Airtel down by 0.35 per cent to Rs 476.35, Satyam Computers down by 0.31 per cent to Rs 831.65, Reliance Indusries down by 0.28 per cent to Rs 1,175.05 and TCS down by 0.14 per cent to Rs 1,042.35.
