Pre-correction days back, Sensex gains 165 pts

Mumbai, Sept 21: The BSE Sensex, backed by an all-round buying in the banking and the cement stocks, reverted back to the pre-correction days, by soaring 165 points to close at 12,274.27 points today, highest since May 12.

The Bombnay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex), earlier opened 48 points up, triggered by Federal Reserves' decision to keep the interest rates unchanged and the subsequent rally in the US Stock markets.

Besides, an allround buying in the midcap and the smallcap indices was the other factor which contributed to the positive close today. The midcap index closed up 0.65 per cent, while the smallcap was up by 0.61 per cent.

The S&P CNX Nifty surged 48.25 points (1.38 per cent), to finish at 3,551.05 points.

The breadth in the broader market too turned positive in favour of 1,372 advances as against 1,138 declines out of total 2,584 scrips that traded on the BSE counters.

The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 3,434 crore, higher than Wednesday's turnover of Rs 3,418 crore.

Major BSE sectors which closed in the green were, auto which edged higher on the declining crude oil price which touched the low of US dollar 60.42 per barrel mark, FMCG was up by 1.95 per cent, the Bankex was up by 1.62 per cent. Rupee also touched a 14-week high today against US dollar when it fell to Rs 45.89 and the oil and gas sector too gained 1.31 per cent.

Major gainers on the index today were Bajaj Auto up by 3.65 per cent to Rs 2,895.55, HLL up by 3.38 per cent to Rs 845, BHEL up by 2.76 per cent to Rs 2,313.55, TCS up by 2.44 per cent to Rs 1,052.60, ACC up by 2.26 per cent to Rs 968.60, ONGC up by 2.05 per cent to Rs 1,196.85, ITC up by 1.95 per cent to Rs 190.65, ICICI up by 1.94 per cent to Rs 664.05 and Gujarat Ambuja up by 1.93 per cent to Rs 115.95.

Besides the losers were, Hero Honda down by 0.76 per cent to Rs 766.70, Reliance Communications down by 0.61 per cent to Rs 343.55, and L&T was down by 0.42 per cent to Rs 2,685.45.
