Sensex strong on buying activity, passes 11,000 mark

Mumbai, Sep 4: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) today earned 136 points to close at 11,914.21 as index pivotals surged on incessant buying activity, led by the midcap and the smallcap scrips, which in turn trailed the strong global markets.

The midcap was up by 1.93 per cent and the smallcap was up by 1.27 per cent.

Nikkei average rose 1.39 per cent, hitting the highest level in more than three months. The Nikkei added 223.82 points, to close at 16, 358.07 points, it's highest closing since May 15.

The Hang Seng index rose 90.16 points or 0.52 per cent, to close at 17,513.88.

The NSE Nifty surged 41.45 points or 1.21 per cent to finish on 3,476.85.

The breadth too stayed positve in favour of 1,627 advances as against 926 declines and 76 scrips that remained unchanged out of the total 2629 scrips that traded the BSE counters today.

Amongst the sectoral indices on the BSE there were no losers, whereas the gainers were led by Auto which was up by 1.83 per cent to 5143.12 points, IT was up by 1.82 per cent to 4365.01 points, Capital Goods was up by 1.59 per cent to 7918.45 points and Consumer Durables was up by 1.25 per cent to 3090.59 points.

Also on the Dollex indices, Dollex-30 was up by 1.67 per cent to 2113.33 points, Dollex-100 was up by 1.77 per cent to 1, 354.15 points, and Dollex-200 was up by 1.86 per cent to 514.43 points.

The list of gainers on the BSE-30 sensex includes Tata Motors up by 3.93 per cent to Rs 897.30, Maruti up by 3.22 per cent to 903.40, L&T up by 2.31 per cent to Rs2,484, Infosys Technologies up by 2.03 per cent to Rs 1,847.75, ICICI Bank up by 1.91 per cent to Rs 620.75, TCS up by 1.90 per cent to Rs 1,017.80, HLL up by 1.88 per cent to Rs 243.30, Reliance Energy up by 1.55 per cent to Rs 451.95, Bajaj Auto up by 1.52 per cent to Rs 2,832.65, Bharti Airtel up by 1.38 per cent to Rs 418.00.

Besides the losers on the index were- Hero Honda down by 1.10 per cent to Rs 718.90, Dr Reddy's Lab down by 0.52 per cent to Rs 739.40, and Ranbaxy laboratories down by 0.10 per cent to Rs 415.00.

Crude oil prices eased below US Dollar 70 a barrel, with the Nymex light crude oil for October delivery closing at USA Dollar 69.19 a barrel and the London Brent crude dropping to US Dollar 69.11 per barrel.
