Reservation demanded for Dalit Muslims

New Delhi, Aug 26: A Muslim organisation based in Uttar Pradesh has, in a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, demanded that Dalit Muslims be granted Scheduled Caste status on par with their counterparts among Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists.

In the letter to Dr Singh, the UP-based Muslim reservation movement (MRM) also demanded that Muslims who have already been declared backwards by the mandal commission and included in the category of backwards class for whom 27 per cent reservation is there, be alloted 9 per cent quota in UP, or as per their population ratio in other states within the said 27 per cent reservation.

''Other Muslims who are also equally backward in educational and economic spheres and who are even inadequatety represented in government services, excluding those in the creamy layer, should also be declared backward, by seeking the report of the commission constituted for this purpose within six months, and may also be granted reservation according to the population ratio in different states,''the letter said.

The MRM said they had already given a representation to the UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh but had elicited no response.

They warned that if effective steps were not taken regarding their demands, they would be compelled to speed up their movement.
