AIIMS medicos observe black day on Jaipur action

New Delhi, Aug 26: Expressing solidarity with anti-reservation activists who were baton charged by police in Japiur yesterday, AIIMS resident doctors and students observed black day today in protest.

The medicos wore black arm bands and badges during the day as they attended to patients.

Several anti-reservation activists-- resident doctors and medical students-- during a protest rally in Japiur were injured in the police lathicharge. They were trying to submit a memorandum to State Governor Pratibha Patil at a public function and were stopped.

''Use of brutal force on peaceful demonstrators is wrong. Police action on medicos in Jaipur is completely unjustifiable,'' AIIMS Students' Union leader and Youth For Equality member Sasmit Sarangi told UNI.

Condemning the police action, he said police incident should be probed.

Medical services in AIIMS functioned as normal today which were affected during the anti-quota agitation by the medicos.

Services in OPD were affected in institute on Thursday and part of Friday as resident doctors were on mass casual leave and students boycotted classes and duties in protest against Government's decision to implement OBC reservation in institutes of higher learning.

''All our doctors and students are working today. Patients are being attended as normal,'' AIIMS spokesperson Shakti Kumar Gupta said.

Youth For Equality yesterday suspended the anti-quota protests, which had flared up again after almost three months, in the capital till Winter Session of Parliament as the controversial OBC reservation Bill was referred to the standing committee for screening.
