Sensex plunges 9 pts, closes at 11,502.62 pts

Mumbai, Aug 22: The Bombay Stock Exchange today plunged by nine points after trading in the positive zone for almost the whole day, largely on account of surge in the crude oil price to US Dollar 72 per barrel mark.

The lull in activity on the sensitive index (Sensex) was noticed after the second half of the days' trading, the period when the selling pressure started to weigh on the select counters as the crude oil price surged.

The surge in oil price weighed heavily on the Refinery and Auto shares to dip by 0.58 and 0.56 per cent respectively, The Sensex closed at 11,502.62 points compared to the previous close of 11,511.68 points.

The BSE today clocked a turnover of Rs 3,063 crore, compared with Monday's Rs 2,687 crore.

Amongst the sectoral indices the Auto sector was down by 0.56 per cent to 4,951.08 points, Oil and Gas was down by 0.58 per cent to 5,441.51 points, Capital Goods was down by 0.54 per cent to 7,695.52, HC by 0.98 per cent and PSU was down by 0.56 per cent, whereas metals sector fared well on the BSE up by 1.47 per cent to 8,213.66 points, Consumer Durables was up by 2.50 per cent to 3,060.73 points and Banking sector up by 0.02 per cent.

Major gainers on the index were Reliance Energy up by 2.78 per cent to Rs 460.80, HDFC up by 2.15 per cent to Rs 1,317.65, HDFC Bank up by 2.11 per cent to Rs 854.45, Hindalco up by 1.77 per cent to Rs 164.25, Tata Steel up by 1.38 per cent to Rs 515.25, Hero Honda up by 1.04 per cent to Rs 703.60, ONGC up by 0.98 per cent to Rs 1,201.70, L&T up by 0.88 per cent to Rs 2,391.30, TCS up by 0.57 per cent to Rs 974.90, and ITC up by 0.55 per cent to Rs 181.70.

Besides the losers on the index were Ranbaxy Lab down by 2.22 per cent to Rs 391.95, Dr Reddy's Lab down by 2.22 per cent to Rs 1,439.85, BHEL down by 1.94 per cent to Rs 2,238.45, Tata Motors down by 1.58 per cent to Rs 845.65, HLL down by 1.53 per cent to Rs 232.25, NTPC down by 1.09 per cent to Rs 122.85, Infosys down by 0.91 per cent to Rs 1,782.15, Bajaj Auto down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 2,750.90, Grasim Industries down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 2,750.90, Grasim Industries down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 2,222.00 and Satyam Computers down by 0.79 per cent to Rs 794.15.

The breadth in the broader market was in favour of 1276 declines as against 1247 advances and 76 scrips that remained unchanged out of the total 2599 scrips that traded on the BSE counter today.
