Sensex opens 36 pts up at 11,547.97

Mumbai, Aug 22: Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index (Sensex) today opened 36 points up at 11,547.97 points and soon touched a high of 11,606 points, taking cue from the strong Asian markets.

It is currently trading at 11,612.44, which is 100 points more than the previous close.

All the sectoral indices on the Sensex were trading in the green today.

There were no losers amidst the BSE Sensex 30 shares.

Major gainers on the index were Reliance Communications which was up by 1.99 per cent, Tata Steel up by 1.73 per cent, Maruti Udyog up by 1.73 per cent, Hindalco up by 1.46 per cent, Reliance Energy up by 1.48 per cent and Gujarat Ambuja Cement up by 1.00 per cent.

Ignoring the outlook for US consumer spending and the surge in crude oil prices, the benchmark Asian indices in countries like Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan were up by between 0.11 to 0.93 per cent.

Metal shares also rose amid firm base metal prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME).
