Volatility takes its toll, Sensex closes at 11,477.48

Mumbai, Aug 17: Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index (Sensex) oscillated into the positive and negative terriotory in a volatile trading for the whole day before finally closing 29 points up at 11,477.48 this evening, as the smallcap and the midcap indices bore the brunt of heavy selling, though the blue chip stocks maintained the decency.

The Sensex swung 172 points, touching a high of 11,551.59 points in the early trade and the low of 11,379.44, as the Asian and other global indices firmed up to help the Sensex edge higher.

The US and other South-East Asian bourses assisted the domestic markets to stay firm, even as the sellers kept up the ante in the smallcap and the midcap sectors.

Midcap index was down by 0.89 per cent to 4,738.78 and smallcap was down by 1.27 per cent to 5,727.42 points.

Amongst the major secotral indices on the BSE, the metals sector went down by 2.12 per cent to 8,199.62 points, PSU was down by 1.16 per cent to 5,428.36, consumer durables was down by 0.33 per cent to 2,948.49 points and banking was down by 0.26 per cent to 5,158.09 points.

Among the gainers were the auto sector, which was up by 0.66 per cent to 4,874.05 points and capital goods up by 0.58 per cent to 7,741.90 points.

Major gainers on the index today were Reliance Communications which was up 3.26 per cent to Rs 294.20, Dr Reddy's Lab up by 2.56 per cent to Rs 1,488.40, Tata Motors up by 2.53 per cent to Rs 837.30, Reliance Industries up by 1.95 per cent to Rs 1,065.40, HLL up by 1.93 per cent to Rs 234.90, BHEL up by 1.02 per cent to Rs 2,267.65, Satyam Computers up by 0.93 per cent to Rs 793.10, Maruti Udyog up by 0.78 per cent to Rs 819.30, L&T up by 0.69 per cent to Rs 2,398.70 and ACC up by 0.54 per cent to Rs 889.70.

Among the losers on the index were Reliance Energy which was down by 3.39 per cent to Rs 462.75, Tata Steel down by 2.72 per cent to Rs 518.65, Hindalco down by 2.57 per cent to Rs 164.65, ONGC down by 2.29 per cent to 1,210.80, Hero Honda down by 1.75 per cent to Rs 692.40, TCS down by 1.45 per cent to Rs 958.90, SBI down by 10.85 per cent to Rs 879.55, NTPC down by 0.83 per cent to Rs 124.85, Bajaj Auto down by 0.71 per cent to Rs 2,721.40 and Wipro down by 0.68 per cent to Rs 511.15.

The breadth in the broader market was in favour of 1,614 declines as against 875 advances and 64 unchanged scrips out of total 2,553 scrips that traded the BSE counter today.
