Sensex falls below 11500 mark, closes at 11,448.37

Mumbai, Aug 16: The BSE Sensex lost its momentum in the last half-an-hour of trade today and fell from a high of 11,508 points to close at 11,448.37 points.

However, on the better side, the close at 11,448.37 was up by 135.32 points from the previous close.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) did not witness much volatility, and buying spree continued in the midcap and smallcap sectors, boosted by the easing of the crude oil price to the US dollar 72 per barrel mark, and also as the Asian indices firmed up after the US rate of inflation turned out to be less than expected.

The Sensex swung 124 points touching a high of 11,507.92 and a low of 11,384.05 points, the level at which it opened today.

Similarly the S&P CNX Nifty too closed up by 42.95 points or 1.3 per cent at 3,356.05 points.

The Midcap ended up by 1.23 per cent to 4,781.48 points and the Smallcap went up by 1.75 per cent to 5,801.02 points.

Among the major BSE sectoral indices, the banking sector grew by 2.51 per cent to 5,171.71 points, PSU was up by 2.46 per cent to 5,492.27 points, oil and gas by 2.35 per cent to 5,432.26 points and capital goods by 2.16 per cent to 7,696.94 points. The only loser amongst the indices was the consumer durables sector, down by 0.73 per cent to 2,958.30 points.

The major gainers on the BSE-30 Sensex were - HDFC bank, up by 4.90 per cent to Rs 846.20, Hero Honda was up by 3.37 per cent to Rs 704.70, L&T by 3.30 per cent to Rs 2,382.15, BHEL by 3.06 per cent to Rs 2,244.80, Ranbaxy by 2.71 per cent to Rs 403.15, ONGC by 2.11 per cent to Rs 1,239.15, ICICI by 2.02 per cent to Rs 589.40, Tata Motors by 1.95 per cent to Rs 816.65, Reliance Communications by 1.91 per cent to Rs 284.90 and SBI by 1.69 per cent to Rs 887.10.

The losers were - Cipla, down by 1.72 per cent to Rs 245.90, Bajaj Auto was down by 1.58 per cent to Rs 2,740.95, HDFC by 0.55 per cent to Rs 1,285.90, ACC by 0.33 per cent to Rs 884.95, Reliance Energy by 0.18 per cent to Rs 479.00 and Infosys by 0.17 per cent to Rs 1,752.35.

The breadth in the broader market was in favour of 1,800 advances as against 726 declines and 54 unchanged scrips, out of total 2,580 scrips that traded on the BSE counters today.
