'Committee examining implementation of OBC reservation'

Mysore, Aug 15: The Oversight Committee, appointed to examine the implementation of 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in higher learning, had taken up an institution wise study to decide whether the it can be done in one go or implemented in phases.

Speaking to media persons here today, the Committee Chairman M Veerappa Moily expressed confidence that the proposal would be implemented from the next academic year itself and the committee was under the process deciding on of how it had to be done.

On reservations that it would be difficult to implement in one go, he said, "I Don't think personal opinions would have an overreaching influence on the overall implementation of the OBC quota. However, views of all concerned people will be taken into account. The committee is holding discussions with the heads of various institutions like IITs and IIMs. We have also received a number of suggestions in this regard." Mr Moily said the committee, which had been asked to submit its report before August 31, would hold meetings for three days from August 17 in New Delhi with the representatives of various institutions. It would also invite experts for a discussion on August 28 and 29 to decide how the process could be completed, he said.

"Ultimately, the purpose of the committee is to ensure that the drive for excellence in these top institutions prevails," he said.

He agreed to a question that five sub-groups, which recently submitted its interim reports to the committee, had opined that it was not possible to implement reservations in one go but it had to be done in a phased manner. This was the reason why the committee was holding extensive meetings with all institutions as well as with experts from outside, to understand their reasons, before it finalise its report, he added.
