'Attempt to weaken India will not be tolerated'

Srinagar, Aug 5: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that India is a peaceful country but any attempt to weaken it and threatned its integrity will not be tolerated.

It is the duty of every citizen from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari to protect our motherland from any internal and external forces, Mr Azad said while addressing the passing out parade of 248 recruits of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) at Bana Singh parade ground here.

''You have now become a part of the Indian Army which has a great tradition,'' Mr Azad told the recruits and said from now onwards you have to dedicate your life to the nation.

He said till now you were living for yourself and from now you have to live for the motherland.

Mr Azad said India was a peaceful country of Mahatama Gandhi who preaches and believes in Ahinisa. But history has proved that any attempt by internal or external forces to weaken our motherland was foiled by us, he added.

Lauding the security forces, Mr Azad said it is because of the sacrifice made by you our motherland is safe and strong.

He recalled the role of the Army and other security forces and state police during natural clamity, including earthquake of October 8 last year.

JAKLI came into being as J&K Militia in 1948 when Pakistan raiders forcibly entered the state, he stated. The Militia consisting of local volunteers pushed back the raiders.

Mr Azad s aid there are 40 per cent Kashmiris in the 17 batallions of the JAKLI while rest 60 per cent are from Jammu and Ladakh regions.

This is the only Regiment in the country where all recruits are from Jammu and Kashmir, he added and adviced them not to succumb to any pressure and do their work without any consideration on region or religion.
