New Delhi, Aug 2: Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh today demanded a CBI probe into the working of Anil Agarwal owned Vedant Resources with whom Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been allegedly associated.

Basing his demand on alleged financial irregularities and scams committed by the overseas based company as revealed in a recently published book ''Vedanta's Billions'' written by Rohit Poddar, Mr Amar Singh said the matter was serious enough to deserve a CBI probe.

''We are not asking for the Finance Minister's resignation, but feel that it would be morally proper for him to resign as he was on the Board of Directors of the Company before taking over as Finance Minister,'' he told reporters after coming out of the Rajya Sabha where he had raised the issue along with with TDP and AIADMK members.

The Samajwadi Party leader said the book states many activities of Mr Anil Agarwal and his companies Vedant Resources, Sterlite and other industries which clearly come in the category of grave financial irregularities and malpractices and they should be subjected to probe in public interest.

And till the probe is completed, the Finance Minister should remain out of office since he was closely associated with these companies, he said.

''In fact we are not demanding Mr Chidambaram's resignation, but cannot help feeling that he should himself quit on moral ground,'' he said.
