Look into BPO crimes, Assocham writes to 3 CMs

New Delhi, Jul 27: Following another brutal killing of a female BPO employee in Banglore, industry chamber ASSOCHAM today raised its concern over security of the BPOs' staff, in letters to the Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Delhi and Haryana.

''The security of the personnel working in the billion IT and ITES industries is of paramount importance for maintaining not only the confidence of the employees, many of whom work for night shifts, but also the investors,'' Assocham President Anil K Agarwal said in his letters to the CMs of the three states, which host the maximum number of BPOs and IT firms.

He said it was a matter of grave concern that a second woman employee was found murdered in Bangalore, the city that has otherwise done the country proud in terms of establishing its brand equity in the global IT and outsourcing arena.

''We request the state administration to take all the necessary measures to tighten the security on the city roads as also near the areas housing the IT firms. We, on our part, are asking our constituent chambers, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Bangalore Chamber of Commerce to provide all the cooperation to the security agencies,'' he said in his letter to the Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy.

In his letter to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda, Mr Agarwal expressed his anxiety over the safety of the BPO personnel, especially the women in Gurgaon, adjoining Delhi. Most of the staff for the Gurgaon centers commute from the national capital, day and night.

Administrations of both Delhi and Haryana should act together in checking the increasing incidents of murders and other heinous crimes, he said.

Mr Agarwal said since the Indian IT and ITES industries enjoy a worldwide reputation, incidents like the murder of Tanya Banerjee, make the international news bringing bad name to the country.

''We are asking BPOs to get police verifications for all the drivers of cabs picking and dropping the staff,'' the Assocham chief said.
