Rahul Mahajan sent to 14-day judicial custody

New Delhi, Jun 8: A city court today sent late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan's son Rahul to 14-day judicial custody in connection with the narcotic drugs case in which he is charged.

Rejecting the police demand for extension of police custody to Rahul, Metropolitan Magistrate A K Chaturvedi ordered him to Tihar jail till June 22.

Police through Public Prosecutor B S Joon sought Rahul's custody for another five days saying he was not cooperating with the investigation.

It also asked for permission to conduct a lie detector test on Rahul, but the court gave no order in this regard.

The defence lawyer Sunil Mittal maintained that Rahul had cooperated with the police and answered all questions posed to him during his two-day police custody.

Maintaining that police had no evidence against Rahul and he was wrongly implicated in the case, he also alleged that the police had not properly defined till now the nature of drugs and its quantity recovered.

He also claimed a delay in registration of the FIR in the matter.

The incident occurred on the intervening night of June 1 and 2 while the FIR was filed on June 3, he said.

The court had remanded Rahul to two-day police custody on June 6.

Rahul was charged under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

A day earlier, the court had remanded three alleged drug peddlers of Nigerian origin to police custody for 10 days. On June 4, the court had sent Sahil Zaroo, who allegedly brought the drugs to the late night party at Mr Mahajan's residence on June 1, to eight-day police custody till June 12.

Yesterday, the police arrested Pramod Mahajan's confidant Harish and driver Ganesh for allegedly tampering with evidence. They were, however, granted bail later on personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each and a surety of like amount.
