Govt serious on resolving reservation issue: Cong

New Delhi, May 29: The Congress today said that the UPA government was seriously trying to find a solution to the contentious issue of reservation for OBCs in institutions of higher education, and was ''working overtime'' for the purpose.

''The Government had constitutd three committees to find a way out of the ticklish issue, and had involved senior ministers, including Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Minister without Portfolio Oscar Fernandes, in the matter,'' party spokesman Rajeev Shukla told mediapersons here.

Noting that the government had repeatedly stated that no section of students would face any loss due to reservation and seats for the general category of students would not be reduced, he said it was for the first time that the Government had given a clear written assurance to this efect to the agitating students and called on the students to accept this offer.

''The Moily committee would give a comprehensive report on a formula to implement reservation for OBC in institutions of higher education, which would cover the issues of the ''creamy layer,'' an increase in the number of seats, building new infrastructure, and other matters,'' he said.

Mr Shukla assailed the BJP for ''double-speak'' on the subject, claiming it had said one thing in Parliament and the other outside.

''This has exposed BJP's double face,'' he said.
