Left urges anti-quota students to withdraw stir

Kolkata, May 29: The Left Front today appealed to the striking anti-reservation students to withdraw their agitation on the quota issue.

"We are appealing to the striking students to withdraw their agitation because the number of seats for the OBCs warrant increase, but the number of seats for the General category would remain the same, " Left Front Chairman Biman Bose told newsmen after the Front meeting.

Mr Bose, however, advocated for deleting the "creamy layer" and stressed on the need for socio-economic condition as the yardstick for admission under the OBC quota.

Mr Bose called for equality, but simultaneously made it clear that there could not be any compromise on merit.

Mr Bose said, " Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a talk with the striking students and hope a solution would definitely come out soon".
