'TN Govt for peaceful settlement of Lankan issue'
Chennai, May 24: The DMK Government today said the vexed Sri Lankan Tamils' problem should be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
Governor S S Barnala made the state government's stand clear on the issue, while delivering his customary address to the newly constituted 13th Assembly.
''The people of Tamil Nadu desire the Sri Lankan Tamils problem, which has been causing concern and attracted the attention of the Tamils worldwide, should be resolved early through a process of peaceful dialogue.'' The Governor said the state government would take necessary measures to safeguard the traditional fishing rights of fishermen of the state to undertake fishing activities near Kachcha Theevu and remove the difficulties faced by them.
Fishing harbours and cold storage facilities needed by the fishermen would be established, he said.
Mr Barnala said the government would render all cooperation to the Union Government to complete the Rs 2,427 crore Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project without obstacles and before the targetted date.
